Food spending down

As a nation, we are becoming more accustomed to cooking with leftovers according to the food and grocery industry body the IGD. Around four in 10 shoppers now say that they are going to use more leftovers when planning the family meals.  They also claimed that they were planning on making savings on the household budget by cooking from scratch rather than using ready-made sauces or ready meals.

Shoppers also said that they were increasingly making a habit of comparing prices between different supermarkets to locate the best deals.

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), consumers spent £620 million less on food – or £30 per household – during the first three months to the end of June compared with the first three months of the year. The total spending on food was £18.6 billion, the lowest quarterly figure since the spring of 2002.
