Millions worldwide vote for the seven natural wonders of the world
Cape Town’s Table Mountain, The Amazon rainforest, and Vietnam's Halong Bay are set to be crowned winners of the New7Wonders of Nature.
Alongside Argentina's Iguazu Falls, South Korea's Jeju Island, Indonesia's Komodo, and the Philippines' Puerto Princesa Underground River, they have been named provisional winners after a massive global poll, which closed earlier this month.
The New7Wonders initiative was launched by a Swiss foundation back in December 2007. From an original list of more than 440 contenders, a shortlist was drawn up of 77, from which a panel of experts selected 28 finalists.
Only one landmark in the British Isles was on the final list of contenders: the Cliffs of Moher, in County Clare on the west coast of Ireland.
Voting, online and via telephone and text, has been ongoing for the last two years.
Natural ‘wonders’ which missed out on being in the provisional top seven include The Grand Canyon, The Great Barrier Reef and the Dead Sea.
The organising body, set up by Zurich-based filmmaker Bernard Weber, said the final results would be announced early in 2012, after independent verification of the results.
The New7Wonders of Nature followed on from a poll to select the New7Wonders of the World, which drew over 100 million votes.
Next on the agenda is a poll to decide on the top seven cities of the world. Participating cities will be announced on January 1.
