The old Classics are the best

You might think that a brand new shiny model would be top of most people’s ideal car wish list, but it appears the younger generation want a motor with a bit more history behind it.

With the growing trend in ‘geek chic’ fashion, it’s no longer acceptable just to dress yourself up in a charity shop cardigan and ironic national health style specs - you need the car to match too.

Over the past year 45% of classic car dealerships have noted a rise in sales, with the most popular model a Honda Civic 2001-2003, sold by 13% of classic car dealers over the last 12 months, according to research by CSMA Club Approved Partner Britannia Rescue.

There are now said to be 200,000 of the top ten most popular classic cars on UK roads, despite a lot of the vehicles including the 5th place Vauxhaull Cavalier once considered very ‘geeky’.

The cars have been given a helping hand in their resurrection as indicators of modern cool through films like The Fast and Furious, which showcased the Honda Civic. Almost a fifth of under 40’s now believe classic cars to be more stylish than new models with 19% believing they are more reliable and better made.

Bernard Ward, Chairman of CSMA Club’s Classic Vehicle Group, said: “Street cred is important – I think these were cars that had something about them when they were new - any of these vehicles would be accepted on our Classic vehicle displays.

“I do believe that a car that was useless when it was new will never become a popular classic, but I am constantly surprised when I go to classic car meets and see what some people drive up in!”
