A KISS BEFORE DYING

Closing date for entries is 11:59 pm, 30th June 2016

DVD, Simply Media, Cert 15 Matt Dillon and Sean Young bring star wattage to this 1991 film noir, which delivers a fair few jump-out-of-your-skin moments. Dillon is creepily believable as a smooth psychopath with his sights on a dazzling fortune, with Young playing the twins he must get rid of to realise his dastardly plan.

THE PIER FALLS

THE PIER FALLS

Closing date for entries is 11:59 pm, 30th June 2016

Author Mark Haddon might spend a lifetime trying to replicate the success of his surreal mystery novel The Curious Incident of The Dog In The Night-Time. The 2003 book topped bestseller lists and continues to enchant London theatregoers. However, this compilation of startling short stories hints that the best is yet to come from Mr Haddon. He can pull you into the heart of a new world with just two or three sentences, and deploys this talent with apparent ease. Standouts include The Island, where a Greek princess is abandoned on a spit of land by a cruel abductor, and the title tale, The Pier Falls, which observes the terrifying carnage – physical and emotional – when a seaside pleasure promenade collapses. Though he flits through time and space at a fair clip and plunders the diverse archives of folklore, mythology and history, Haddon’s work is easy to relate to because it’s underpinned with razor-sharp clarity about what it means to be human – the good, the bad and the downright ugly.
